Big News for Tradies: The Australian Government Just Made It Easier to Get Your Skills Recognised

If you're a carpenter, electrician, plumber, or any other skilled tradesperson living in Australia on a visa — or thinking about making the move — the 2026–27 Federal Budget has just delivered some of the most significant changes to trade skills recognition in years. And at Shamrock Migration Services, we want to make sure you understand exactly what it means for you.

What Did the Budget Announce?

The Australian Government has committed AUD $75.1 million over four years to completely overhaul the skills assessment system run by Trades Recognition Australia (TRA). The goal is straightforward: get skilled tradespeople into the Australian workforce faster, with less red tape.

Here's what that means in practice:

  • A modernised skills assessment system that integrates occupational licensing — so your overseas qualifications and your licence recognition happen together, not as two separate, time-consuming processes

  • Streamlined licensing pathways for priority trades, cutting the time it takes foreign tradespeople to enter the workforce by up to six months

  • An expected 4,000 additional skilled trades workers entering the Australian workforce every year as a result

On top of that, a further AUD $5.6 million over three years has been committed specifically for onshore visa holders — people already living in Australia on a working holiday, student, or other temporary visa. This new program will allow TRA to recognise your existing qualifications and practical trade experience, helping you gain employment in your trade faster without starting from scratch.

Why This Matters If You're a Carpenter (or Any Tradie) in Australia

Australia is in the middle of a significant housing and construction boom, and the demand for skilled tradespeople — particularly carpenters, bricklayers, plasterers, and roofers — is not slowing down any time soon. The Government knows this, which is why trades like carpentry are already being prioritised and fast-tracked through TRA's current Migration Skills Assessment (MSA) program.

Add the Budget investment on top of that, and the message is clear: now is an exceptional time to be a skilled tradesperson pursuing permanent residency in Australia.

If you hold an Irish, UK, or other comparable qualification, you may already be eligible for a streamlined MSA — a paper-based assessment that avoids the more complex and costly offshore assessment process entirely.

What Is the Pathway to Permanent Residency for Tradies?

For skilled tradespeople, the most common route to Australian PR is through the points-tested skilled migration visas:

Subclass 189 — Skilled Independent Permanent residence, no state sponsorship required, available Australia-wide.

Subclass 190 — Skilled Nominated Permanent residence with state nomination — and an automatic 5 bonus points on your score. Western Australia is actively nominating trades workers right now.

Subclass 491 — Skilled Work Regional A provisional visa (5 years) with 15 bonus points automatically added to your score. Live and work regionally for 3 years and you can apply for permanent residence through the Subclass 191.

Carpenters (ANZSCO 331212) are currently being invited at 65 points — the minimum threshold — meaning a well-prepared application can get you into the system without needing an exceptional points score.

The Process in Three Steps

1. Skills Assessment (TRA — Migration Skills Assessment) Your qualifications and work experience are assessed against Australian standards. With the new Budget investment, this process is set to become faster and more integrated with licensing. Right now, carpenters from Ireland and the UK are already eligible for a streamlined MSA — no travel required, no practical assessment, just a documentary review.

2. English Language Test Sit either IELTS or PTE Academic to demonstrate English proficiency. A stronger score means more points — which means a better chance of receiving an invitation.

3. Expression of Interest (EOI) via SkillSelect Lodge your profile on the Department of Home Affairs SkillSelect system and wait for an invitation to apply. EOIs remain active for two years and invitations are issued regularly.

Already in Australia on a Working Holiday or Temporary Visa?

This Budget is particularly good news for you. The new $5.6 million onshore program is designed specifically for visa holders already living and working in Australia. If you've been swinging a hammer, laying bricks, or running cables on Australian sites, that experience is about to count for a lot more in the assessment process.

Don't wait for the new program to launch before taking action — the groundwork (skills assessment, English test, EOI) can be done now, and Shamrock can guide you through every step.
