From Working Holiday Visa to Permanent Residency: Your Practical Guide

Arriving in Australia on a Working Holiday Visa is not just exciting—it’s a privilege. Only select countries have access to the WHV program, so if you’re here, consider yourself one of the lucky ones.

You’ve travelled, worked, explored…and now you’re thinking: “I want to make Australia home.”
So what happens next?

Below is a straightforward guide to help you move from a WHV towards Permanent Residency.

Tip 1: Make the Most of Your Full 3 WHV Years

Every year, we see backpackers panic at the end of their first WHV because they didn’t complete their regional work. Without that, a second or third year becomes impossible—and so do many long-term visa options.

If you can complete your farm/regional work to earn a 2nd and 3rd WHV, do it. Those extra years give you valuable breathing room to plan your future.

Tip 2: Work in an Industry Aligned With Your Skills

A common issue: WHV holders wanting sponsorship in jobs they’ve only just started. Most employer-sponsored visas require at least 1 year of experience in the nominated occupation.

Focus on roles you already have experience or qualifications in. The stronger your work history, the easier sponsorship and PR pathways become.

Tip 3: Not on the Skills List? Don't Panic

If your current experience isn’t on the Skilled Occupation List, it’s not game over.
Many WHV holders choose to study in Australia in an in-demand field, opening new pathways to skilled visas and eventually Permanent Residency.

Tip 4: Don’t Be Afraid to Ask About Sponsorship

If you’re working in a role that is on the skills list, speak to your employer early.
Ask whether they offer sponsorship—don’t wait until your visa is almost up. Early conversations mean better planning and fewer surprises.

Tip 5: Do Your Research (Seriously)

Each visa has specific requirements, and missing one small detail can derail your plans.
Take the time to understand the eligibility criteria so you know exactly where you stand.

Tip 6: Start Sooner Than You Think

Many clients come to us with only weeks or months left on their visa. By then, options can become extremely limited.

Start early. Find out what you qualify for and map out a plan—future-you will thank you.

Tip 7: Talk to an Expert
